Since medley was built by an online educational content creator, we know that managing your questions and instructional prompts is one of the most tedious parts of the content publishing process. With that in mind, we built a special feature into freestyle to make life much easier.
In freestyle, you manage your questions separate from creating your games. When you publish a game, you can select what question list or lists you’d like your different game versions to use. Then, you can head over to the medley creator portal to publish each version: adding images, setting prices, and writing descriptions distinctly for each version of the game.
That means no more tediously editing each game to add and edit questions for different versions. Instead, create your game once, and freestyle will do the rest.
How To Use Question Lists
In freestyle, questions are grouped into Question Lists. When you publish a game, you can create multiple versions of the game. Each version uses one or more Question List to populate the questions students see when they play the game. When you publish a game, you can select which Question List (or Lists) each version uses. You can also limit each version to a subset of the total questions in a given Question List: selecting 20 random questions out of all the questions in the list, for example.
You can’t select individual questions for each game – just Question Lists – so it’s important to make sure your Question Lists match the versions of the game you’d ultimately like to publish. If you’re a Speech Language Pathologist, for example, you might create a Question List for each articulation target, like Initial /r/, Final /s/. Or, if you’re a Geometry teacher, you might create a different Question List for each trigonometric function.
Creating Your First Question List
Now let’s create our first Question List.
After you select the Question Manager from your Dashboard’s left-hand sidebar, you’ll see a screen that looks like this.
Click the “New List” button, enter a list name, and click “Create.” After a few moments, your list will appear in the left-hand sidebar in the Question Manager. Click on the name of the list you just created.
Adding Questions
During the early part of our beta period, freestyle supports one type of question: Multiple Choice Questions. Over the next several weeks, we’ll be adding several other types of questions, too. You’ll get an email letting you know when you’ve added a new question type.
When you select a Question List in the Question Manager, you’ll see all the questions that exist in that list, split by question type. Currently, our question list is empty.
Click “Add Question” to add a new question to your list.
Defining Question Content
A sidebar will open, containing the fields that you can fill in to create a new Multiple Choice question.
You don’t need to fill in every field to create a multiple choice question. Each multiple choice question requires:
- A question prompt (text or image);
- A correct answer (text or image);
- At least one incorrect answer (text or image).
freestyle’s game engine is smart: it will show the question correctly regardless of whether the question and answers are all text, all images, or a mix of both.
Go ahead and enter your first question. You can just use text, or you can upload any images you have handy. I just used text:
Once you’re done, click “Create”, and your question will be saved.
Now go ahead and add a few more questions–you’ll see them all live later when we test your new game!
